Completing braces or Invisalign® treatment is an exciting milestone, but keeping your smile straight is just as important. Teeth can gradually shift throughout life, even after successful orthodontic treatment.
At Smile City Orthodontics, we offer same-day in-house clear retainers, Vivera® retainers, fixed retainers, traditional Hawley retainers, and Hawley retainers with pontics for selected patients with missing teeth.
Dr. George Jacob, BDS, MDS, MS, an American Board-Certified Orthodontist, recommends retainers based on alignment, bite, dental health, and long-term needs. Our privately owned practice is in Sunnyvale, TX, serving Mesquite, Forney, East Dallas, Garland, Seagoville, and nearby communities.
Custom retainers for eligible patients.
Options for different retention needs.
Custom Invisalign retainer system.
Individualized retention planning.
After braces or Invisalign®, teeth can shift toward previous positions. Changes in bone, gums, bite, and normal aging can contribute. Retainers help maintain alignment and protect orthodontic results. Without consistent wear, crowding, spacing, or rotations may return.
How Long Should You Wear Retainers?
Retainer wear is generally a lifelong commitment. Many patients start with more frequent wear and transition to nighttime wear as directed by their orthodontist.

Located behind teeth.
No need to remember to put it in.
Needs bond checks and careful hygiene.
Are Fixed Retainers Really Permanent?
Fixed retainers can loosen, break, or need replacement. Careful cleaning around the wire is important. They may not retain every tooth in the arch, so a removable retainer may also be recommended.
Remove for eating and oral hygiene.
Acrylic and wire construction.
Some designs allow limited adjustments.
May incorporate pontics for missing teeth.
Maintain Tooth Position While Temporarily Replacing a Missing Tooth
A Hawley retainer with a pontic incorporates an artificial tooth to fill a visible missing-tooth space while maintaining alignment and space for future restoration.
For selected patients missing permanent teeth such as lateral incisors.
For growing patients or others not ready for implants.
Helps improve appearance of visible gaps.
Maintains selected spaces for restorative treatment.
Is a Hawley Retainer with a Pontic a Permanent Tooth Replacement?
No. It is typically a temporary cosmetic and space-maintaining appliance, not a permanent implant or bridge. Dr. Jacob can coordinate with a restorative dentist.

READY FOR A HEALTHIER, STRAIGHTER SMILE?
Examine teeth, existing retainer, and alignment changes.
Create records for custom fabrication.
Select clear, Vivera®, fixed, or Hawley as appropriate.
Same-day in-house clear option or outside manufacture.
Review fit, cleaning, insertion, and schedule.
Monitor fit and replace damaged retainers.
Lifespan varies by material, design, grinding habits, care, and use. Clear retainers may wear, crack, or loosen; Hawley appliances may require repairs; fixed wires may need rebonding; Vivera® retainers also need replacement over time.
When Should You Replace Your Retainer?
Seek evaluation for cracks, distortion, excessive wear, looseness, or poor fit. A suddenly tight retainer can signal tooth movement; do not force it.
